REPRESENTATIVE GENERAL TRACING BUREAU

Attn.
Major Vedeler.
SUBJECT:
Norway’s Interest in the Recovery of children in Germany.
1)
The Central
Tracing Bureau has received a report from UNRRA Child Search Team in Regensburg
regarding a group of Norwegian children formerly cared for in the S.S.
children’s home Sonnewiese in Karhren-Sahlin, Borna near Leipzig, Saxony (Soviet
Zone of Occupat. and two letters verifing certain aspects of the report.
2)
According to
information on hand the majority of Norwegian children (250) were under 3 years
of age, presumably these were children of unmarried Norwegian women and German
fathers. We understand that Norway is not particularly interested in recovering
these children.
3)
While the
Sonneweise home is in the Soviet Zone and therefore not UNRRA responsibility, we
are eager to know whether Norway has lost children other than those of unmarried
Norwegian women by German fathers and whether Norway is interested in the
illegitimate children described above.
4)
We should like
to make it clear that we do not have a group of children in mind at the moment,
but there have been individual reports of activity in regard to Norwegian
children which lead us to belive that some groups will be found. Would it be
possible for you to confirm on Norway’ interests in the matter.
5)
In the
particular case of Sonnewiese children, the Central Tracing Bureau, if Norway is
interested in these children, could put the question to the Soviet Authorities,
Division for Repratiation and Tracing of United Nations Nationals.
